Northern Lights, Tundra and the Arctic
Ocean The Dempster
Highway (Yukon) in the winter!
An adventurous journey through the arctic winter.
- 8 days / 7 nights -
In the heart of every adventure is a great story, and
for those who look for adventure there can be no greater place to draw
upon for a story than in the Yukon, Canada's True North!
Witness the dance of northern lights against a cobalt
night sky and the stillness echoed in an arctic winter. A trip along the
famous Dempster Highway through frozen tundra across the arctic circle
to Inuvik at the Mackenzie River delta and further north on an
ice road
across swamps and the frozen Arctic Ocean. The final destination is
Tuktoyaktuk, a small Inuit village at the Beauford Sea. You will learn
how people of the arctic live under extreme weather conditions.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival at Whitehorse airport and reception by your
tour guide.
Transfer to a downtown hotel in Whitehorse.
River View Hotel
Day 2:
Our mini
bus will take you to the
legendary capital city of the world famous Klondike Gold Rush
Dawson
City by way of the Klondike Highway. Dawson City delivers an impression
of a wandering through a western movie set. Dawson City can be best
described as where reality and legend mix to maintain the ambiance of
the Gold Rush Era. You now have taken your first steps toward becoming a
Sourdough. It's not a bad thing, as one who is bestowed as a Sourdough
is looked upon with pride. The title is given to anyone who survives a
winter in Dawson. There's a general spirit of adventure that is
noticeable in Dawson and it flows like water everywhere in the far
North. Have a drink at the "Westminster Hotel" and meet some of the
earthy local residents.
Hotel: Aurora Inn, Dawson City
Day 3:
Take your time and
explore Dawson City
in winter and learn details about the adventurous history of the
great
Gold Rush of 1898. You can visit the Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek as
well as a huge gold dredge. The Midnight Dome provides a viewpoint high
above Dawson City, the gold fields and the Yukon River. You'll also have
a chance to see northern lights (Aurora
Borealis).
Hotel: Aurora Inn, Dawson City
Day 4: Leaving Dawson City you'll drive
along the famous Dempster Highway through frozen tundra landscape that
pays homage to the migration of one of the world last free 125.000 heads
caribou herd.
More than 700 km/440 miles) through the frozen winter landscape of
the northern mountains and tundra are lying ahead. Nearly half way is
Eagle Plains, the only service station and primary rest stop on the way
from Dawson City to Inuvik. At the Eagle Plains Lodge you will find a
unique photo documentation about life in the Arctic.
Eagle Plains Motel
Day 5:
Just 40 kilometres /25 miles north of Eagle Plains you'll travel
across the Arctic Circle. Wide treeless valleys and uninterrupted
stillness will capture you! Information boards at the road turnouts
brief you on the aurora borealis and the geological and geographic
characteristics of the area. Mid way between Eagle Plains and Inuvik is
Fort McPherson, which gained sad popularity, when a sled dog patrol of
the Northwest Mounted Police got lost and tragically perished in
December of 1910. The ice bridge over the frozen Peel River becomes your
first experience in traveling on a "Northern Winter Road" before
arriving in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Located on the Mackenzie
River delta, Inuvik marks the end of the road and start of the official
Ice Road to the Arctic.

Day 6: Traveling 200
kilometre/125 miles on the frozen Arctic Ocean/Beaufort Sea to a small
coastal village is a unique experience few visitors can boast about. The
destination is the only accessible Inuit community by road, Tuktoyaktuk.
Here you can discover how Inuit live in some of the world's most
extreme
winter weather. This section of the trip is definitely the most
unforgettable highlight! Late afternoon you will be back in Inuvik.
Bed and breakfast
Day 7:
Around noon you will arrive at the airport in Inuvik, from where you
will return to Whitehorse.
River View Hotel
Day 8: Transfer to Whitehorse airport and departure, or an add-on stay in a
cabin with winter activities of your choice.
