The Legendary Yukon
Territory Skagway - Whitehorse - Dawson City - Arctic
Circle
8 days / 7 nights - Hotel Round Trip
-
During our hotel
round-trip you will trace in the tracks of gold miners on the
Klondike
Highway starting from Skagway at the Alaska Panhandle to Dawson City in the Yukon
Territory. You might get lucky panning gold, or during a game of poker
or roulette at Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall. The breathtaking
beauty of the pristine landscapes along the Dempster Highway with
its endless seeming spaces is bound to captivate you. Enjoy the incredible
silence, which surrounds you at the arctic circle. Steep canyons and
emerald coloured lakes await you, lining the route of the historic White
Pass Train, which will take you to Skagway, nestled into the Alaska
Panhandle.
Itinerary:
Day 1
Upon your arrival at the Airport in
Whitehorse, our guide will greet you and take you to your
Hotel, which is located close to the shores of the Yukon River, and in
close proximity to many local highlights (such as the Yukon
Sternwheeler, Old Log Church, McBride Museum, wooden Skyscraper) as well
as restaurants, cafes and galleries.
Hotel: Westmark Klondike Inn
Day 2 During
our 550 km / 340 mi drive on the
Klondike Highway we
will have several stops to give you chances to take pictures or simply
stretch your legs. In the late afternoon we will reach Dawson City. The
legendary capital of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898
is "living
history". For over 100 years people have been mining for gold in the
area. In the evening you can try your luck at Poker, Blackjack or
Roulette when we visit "Diamond Tooth Gertie's" Gambling Hall. Long
legged can can girls, Honk-y-Tonk piano players and a hearty whiskey or a
Sourdough Cocktail create an authentic gold-miner's atmosphere and will
make for an unforgettable evening.
Hotel: Aurora Inn or
Westmark Inn
Day 3
The Dempster Highway! The fascination of the uninhabited tundra will
captivate you from the very first moment. We encourage you to keep your
cameras ready; for on this leg of our journey you will have a good
chance to spot moose and
caribou and with a bit of luck you may observe the
mighty tundra Grizzly Bears. We will pass Eagle Plaines to
reach the
Arctic Circle, where large valleys of the treeless tundra are opening up
and embrace you with its mesmerizing silence. During our extended stop
you will learn about the phenomena of the northern lights and the
geographical uniqueness of this region through information boards and
will get plenty of time to take photographs. You will spend the night in
Eagle Plaines, the only lodge on the 750 km / 470 mi Dempster Highway.
Use the opportunity to view the unique documentary about the wildlife
in the arctic and the 7 year construction period of the Dempster
Highway.

Day 4
The return trip from Eagle Plaines offers
more unforgettable vistas of the pristine and rugged
tundra, pastures for the more then 120,000 heads counting Porcupine
Caribou Herd. After returning to Dawson City you will experience how
nowadays plaza miners are working their claims. Pan yourself for gold
and keep the gold you may find. You will travel back in time to the days
of the gold-rush when visiting the Gold Dredge #4 and the discovery
claim at the Bonanza Creek.
Hotel: Aurora Inn or
Westmark Inn
Day 5
After your visit of the Gold Miner's Museum and the Jack London Cabin we
will say good bye to Dawson City from the "Dome". The Dome,
high above Dawson, offers
an unforgettable 360 view of the Klondike and the Yukon River and the
many scars left from 100 years of gold mining. Back in Whitehorse we
will have enough time to see the world's longest wooden fish ladder and
the amazing expositions of both, the Beringia and the Transportation
Museum.
Hotel: Westmark Klondike
Inn
Day 6
A short trip by van will take you from
Whitehorse to the White Pass, your starting point for
a charming ride on the historic White Pass Train, which will take you to Skagway. Built in
1898 during the Klondike gold rush this railway stretches
through breathtaking panoramas of mountains, glaciers and
waterfalls. "Built with Gold": It took tens of thousands of
workers and 500 tons of explosives to build this railway
through the rugged terrain of the coastal mountain range and
under extreme weather conditions. Seize the afternoon to
stroll through the historic town of Skagway the starting
point for the famous Klondike Gold Rush.
Hotel: Westmark Inn,
Skagway
Day 7
In the morning the White Pass Train will take you back to the White
Pass, from where you will travel back to Whitehorse by van. The
afternoon will be at your leisure on your own schedule, be it a shopping
excursion on Main Street or a visit of a museum. Before your last night
at a hotel you get a chance to reflect over an unforgettable trip during
a cozy dinner.
