CHILKOOT TRAIL Hiking Adventure   -   1 week    -
The Gold Rush Trail Part I  (Yukon Territory - Alaska)

One hundred years ago gold was discovered near the Klondike River in the Yukon Territory causing the greatest Gold Rush the world ever has seen. Tens of thousands of adventures, greedy for gold, followed the gruelling Chilkoot Trail over the Chilkoot Pass, suffering incredible hardship to reach the rich goldfields of the Klondike. The present day Chilkoot Trail follows the historic corridor from Dyea to Bennet Lake.

Day 1
Arrival at Whitehorse. You will be welcomed at the airport by our guide and transferred to the River View Hotel.

Day 2
In the morning transfer by a passenger van from Whitehorse to Skagway via the scenic White Pass*. In the afternoon there will be plenty of time to take a stroll through the historic district of Skagway. Here most of all buildings are remnants of the Gold Rush era. In the late afternoon you will be transferred from Skagway to Dyea campground where the Chilkoot Trail Head is located.

(*It is possible to take an optional historic train ride on the "White Pass & Yukon Route" down to Skagway. Price per person US$ 80.00 approx.)

Day 3 to 6
Ascent through the northern Rain ForestYou will hike the Chilkoot Trail from Dyea over the Chilkoot Pass to Bennet Lake. Stretched to all along the Chilkoot Trail and over the Chilkoot Pass are numerous artefacts of the Klondike Gold Rush. The Scales below the Golden Stairs
You will pass through the remains of old trail stops such as Canyon City, Sheep Camp, The Scales, The Golden Stairs and Happy Camp. After 35 miles / 56 km Bennet Lake will be reached. This Lake was once bustling with activity. On May 29, 1898, within 48 hours of the lake shedding its winter ice cover, a fleet of 7,200 primitive home-made boats departed toward the Klondike gold fields.

At day 6 a float plane will pick you up by late afternoon for a spectacular flight back from Bennet Lake to Whitehorse.Old Log Church at Bennet Lake
