BIG SALMON RIVER CANOE TOUR ADVENTURE - 13 Days
- Yukon Territory
This canoe tour will take
you on an adventurous
eleven days
canoe tour over solitary lakes and rivers through the magnificent
wilderness of the Yukon Territory. The Big Salmon River canoe tour starts
with an spectacular thirty minutes flight by floatplane
from Whitehorse to the Quiet Lake. Once you have started your canoe
tour, 330 km of absolute wilderness far away from any signs
of civilization are lying ahead of you Big Salmon Lake, Big
Salmon River and Yukon River were once used as main
transportation routes by Yukon's First Nations people, trappers
and gold prospectors. Big Salmon River is a white water of
class II. The group will be led by an experienced guide, allowing this
route to be managed even by beginners.
Itinerary:
Day 1
Arrival at Whitehorse. You will be welcomed at the
airport by our guide, and transferred to a down town hotel. The
remaining afternoon will be at your leisure.
Hotel: River View Hotel
Day 2 Sightseeing of Whitehorse
in the morning: McBride
Museum, Yukon Stern Wheelers, and the Old Log Church. Last chance for
shopping. In the afternoon the group will be transferred by float
plane to Quiet Lake about 250 km /155 mi east of Whitehorse.
Alternatively you can be transferred to Quiet Lake by van (approximately 3
1/2 hours). Late afternoon beginners will be given basic instruction
on how to handle a canoe.
Day 3 to 12
After canoeing for two days on Quiet Lake, Sandy Lake and Big Salmon
Lake you will reach Big Salmon River. The fast currents of this river
can quickly change to easily passable rapids, or to slower currents.
It may be necessary to portage, or
line the canoes around log jams and sweepers.
 The surrounding mountains, up to
2000 meters/6.500 ft. high, touch the waters of the endlessly winding Big Salmon River. The
riverbanks are entirely overgrown by deep impenetrable brush and
forest;
however, with some luck you might spot moose,
bears, lynx, or wolves, and often you catch sight of
beavers and bald eagle on the
Big Salmon River. The
fish you catch can provide variety on the daily menu. Everyone will have
the
opportunity to learn a few
tricks of wilderness survival. After nine days you reach the
Yukon River; where, on day nine your canoe trip ends at Little Salmon Village. This little First Nation village
is occupied only during the salmon fishing
season. A short drive in a van will take you to Carmacks and on to Whitehorse.
