Tay Mountains Camp

Tay - Mountains Trekking Tour     - 12 days / 11 nights -

A tour of a lifetime for the real wilderness enthusiast who likes to be in the heart of unspoiled nature. There are no hikes on well maintained National Park trails, but trekking on ancient native hunting trails through the forests and mountains of the southeastern Yukon Plateau. This region is characterized by densly forested lowland with countless lakes, swamps and creeks, as well as subalpine Tundra below rugged mountain ranges. Shaped by the retreating ice age glaciers it remains pristine to this day. It is the land of the Grizzley bear and wolf, of roaming herds of caribou and huge Yukon moose.
As a modern version of "Mountain Man" you will become a nomad, searching for game and a campsite in a primordial landscape.
On this tour you will be accompanied by a guide with more than 30 years of experience as a guide an trapper. He knows every trail and mountain pass in this region, and will gladly share his extensive knowledge about every aspect of wilderness life, the animals, plants and rich history of the North. Low impact camping will be practized on the whole trip, and the small group size (four trekkers plus guide) will ensure a high degree of individualized service.

Itinerary:

Day 1
Arrival at Whitehorse airport and reception by your tour guide. Transfer to a downtown hotel.

Day 2
You will fly by small bushplane to an unnamed lake in the Connelly Mountains, about 250 miles/400 km north of Whitehorse. Tent camp by the lake and a first chance to experience the grandeur of northern wilderness.Tay Mountains Valley

Day 3
The trail leads through primeval spruce forest to a high valley, where we will pitch our tents among the willows above a clear mountain creek. Every trail bears the tracks of wolf and moose, and it is a good idea to keep an "open eye" for wildlife.

Day 4
From "Willowcamp" we will take a day-hike, with light packs into the subalpine tundra of the Tay-Mountains in search for caribou, moose and bear which at this season like to frequent these areas of lush spring forage. Caribou as cold-adaptive animals are frequently seen resting on remaining snowfields. Binoculars and a good spotting scope, which your guide will bring along, will ensure a good view without disturbing the wildlife. Young caribou are very curious, and it is possible that they will "prance" within a short distance to observe us as well.

Day 5
Descent to Tay-Lake. This cold, clear lake (about 6 miles/10 km in length), offers a possibility to fish for lake trout, northern pike and arctic grayling. Always a welcome addition to our camp menu.Tay Mountains, Trout

Day 6
Lazy day, camped by the lake. A chance to relax, fish, or to watch the slopes of Tay-Mountains for the elusive wild sheep that roam the rugged peaks. Right along the lakeshore you might spot beavers, river otters, bald eagles and a variety of birdlife.

Day 7
We break camp and hike around the east end of Tay-Lake, slowly ascending into the high valley of the "Cheecheera Mountains". Camp is in a stand of subalpine fir trees at the foot of "caribou pass".

Day 8
Across "caribou pass" into the seemingly endless mountain wilderness Tay Mountains, Glacier Rubble of the "Cheecheeras". This is caribou country, also home for ptarmigan, marmots and golden eagles. Camp will be on a small knoll above a clear creek with numerous pool sections, and a great scenic view.

Day 9
Crossing the "Cheecheera Plateau". Rolling mountain tundra, glacier rubble, lichen and dwarf berry bushes. Snowfields with a network of caribou tracks and whistling ground squirrels among the tussocks. With luck we might spot their natural enemies: wolf, fox wolverine and golden eagle. There is also always a chance to observe a Grizzly.

Day 10
We descent through scrubforest along the flanks of the mountains into an extensive valley, and the narrow band of gravel, that is the "Canol Road". This road was built in 1943 by the American Army to facilitate an oil pipeline from the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories to a refinery in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Day 11
A van will be ready for us. Drive to Whitehorse (about six hours) and the amenities of a modern hotel.

Day 12
Transfer to Airport and departure.
